Brief History
The exact origins of the Lakeland Terrier are unknown, but its appearance speaks volumes. It bears a strong resemblance to both the Bedlington and the Airdale terriers, but it may have been crossed with a number of additional breeds. As their name suggests, the Lakeland Terrier first came to notice in the Lake District, a picturesque area of northern England. These tenacious little dogs put bigger dogs to shame, as they did whatever it took to catch their prey – including tunnelling underground for days on end. Nowadays the Lakeland Terrier is a versatile and friendly dog who thrives as a family pet, guard dog and hunter.

A. Protection Ability
The Lakeland Terrier is small but mighty. They will bark loudly without hesitation and will show aggression when provoked. There's no doubt that this dog breed can offer their owners adequate protection.
B. Ease of Training
Lakies are independent to a fault, and can be difficult to train. Owners should approach this task with discipline, enthusiasm and a sense of humour!
C. Playfulness
Lakeland Terriers love their owners and will happily show them affection. They're feisty and independent, as natural born hunters they can easily be distracted by birds or other small animals.
D. Exercise needs
This breed should have at least one or two daily walks, each lasting at least twenty minutes. They are small enough to live in apartments, but will be happier in a home with a large garden in which they dig and run.
E. Adaptability
The Lakeland Terrier is not the most easy-going of breeds, but their quirky character compensates for this. They can live in a home of any size (provided they get enough daily exercise) and need quite a lot of interaction with their owner. With a bit of determination, novice owners will be able to handle this breed.
