Brief History
The German word “Lowchen” literally translates to “lion dog”, and this description is apt. Whilst Lowchens certainly have a distinctive appearance, historians have argued for years about the exact origins of the breed – did it come from Germany, the Mediterranean, Russia or even Tibet? Nobody knows for sure. Lowchens have been at risk of extinction more than once, but evidently these little lions are as tough as their namesake. Whilst still a rarity, modern day Lowchens are still in existence and unlikely to go anywhere.
Dog Breed Characteristics
A. Protection Ability
Lowchens are deceptively loud, and will bark confidently in the face of suspicious activity. They truly are fearless, and will often challenge larger dogs.
B. Ease of Training
Reasonably intelligent, the Lowchen is quite easy to train. It's important that owners begin training this breed early, and, in particular, pay extra attention to reducing their excessive barking.
C. Playfulness
These dogs love their owners and will do anything for play time. They are very affectionate and full of energy – owners will never be lonely with a Lowchen!
D. Exercise needs
Lowchens should have twenty minutes of exercise each day. They enjoy long walks and make excellent walking companions, provided the terrain isn't too challenging.
E. Adaptability
The Lowchen can adapt to most homes and climates, but they cannot abide being alone. Novice owners can absolutely take on this breed, but they shouldn't expect to get much time to themselves.
