Brief History
The origins of the Pomeranian are a little mysterious, as the breed didn't come to be known until it arrived in England in the late nineteenth century. The breed was a favourite of Queen Victoria, whose little Pom, named “Turi”, was by her side when she passed away in 1901. Queen Victoria was not the only historical figure to become enamored with this dog breed; the Pomeranian was also beloved by Marie Antoinette, Amadeus Mozart and Emile Zola, and one lucky Pomeranian was even taken to safety on a lifeboat during the sinking of the Titanic. Today, the Pomeranian is one of the most popular breeds in both the UK and USA.

Dog Breed Characteristics

A. Protection Ability
Pomeranians bark a lot, but this is always intended as a warning to their owners. Their hearts are in the right place, but they can often be mistaken about exactly what constitutes a threat and what is simply a passerby or the postman.

B. Ease of Training
Poms are quite easy to train, and are particularly talented at picking up tricks. They can, however, take over if their owner doesn't establish themselves as the leader.

C. Playfulness
Whilst these dogs can be quite playful, they have a tendency to snap at small children and become resentful when they're not the centre of attention. This breed isn't recommended for houses with young children.

D. Exercise needs
Poms don't require much exercise. Dog training sessions are a great way of giving them a little bit of physical and mental exercise without overexerting them.

E. Adaptability

The main concern with the Pomeranian is that they strongly dislike being left on their own, and they can be aggressive with young children. This dog breed is relatively simple to care for, but these factors should definitely be taken into account by prospective owners.
