Brief History
As their name suggests, the Norfolk Terrier was originally bred in Norfolk to kill vermin in barns. As their reputation grew so did their demand, and by the late nineteenth century Norfolk Terriers were being brought to Cambridge University, where students needed help with their rat problems. Over the next few years the breed fluctuated heavily as different breeders tried different cross-breeds, and this led to arguments about the breed standard, particularly concerning the ears. After World War II it was decided that prick-ear dogs would be Norwich Terriers and drop-ear dogs would be Norfolk Terriers.
Dog Breed Characteristics
A. Protection Ability
The Norfolk Terrier has the capacity to be very loud when it wants to, but it's generally not recommended as either a watch dog or a guard dog.
B. Ease of Training
This tiny dog breed can be very stubborn, which can make training difficult. They are particularly resistant to house-training, and require a very patient owner.
C. Playfulness
Norfolk Terriers are always in the mood to play, either with their owners or with dog toys. They are also happy to snuggle up in their owner's lap each evening.
D. Exercise needs
This breed needs at least one short walk each day, or they will become destructive. They are also prone to overreacting, and so owners should make sure their pet doesn't overindulge and gets enough exercise.
E. Adaptability
The Norfolk Terrier is highly adaptable to a variety of settings. They are tolerant of most weather conditions and can be left alone during the day time.
