Brief History
The Papillon (whose name translates to “butterfly”) can be seen in paintings dating as far back as the sixteenth century, and they were a favoured companion amongst European nobility (some going as far as carrying them in small baskets).
The Papillon has a well-deserved air of status, and the breed was adored by Marie Antoinette. These tiny dogs arrived in England in 1901, where they remain as a beloved domestic companion.
Dog Breed Characteristics
A. Protection Ability
The Papillon is an excellent barker and excels as a watch dog. Their excessive yapping can verge on irritating though, and so extra care must be taken to train this predisposition away.
B. Ease of Training
This breed is highly intelligent and eager to please. They can pick up commands after just one dog training session, and they respond particularly well to food as a reward.
C. Playfulness
Papillons adore attention and will do anything to get it. They enjoy energetic playtime (particularly with children), but are intuitive enough to realise when it's time to settle down and have belly rubs.
D. Exercise needs
They may be tiny, but Papillons have lots of energy. They need daily walks, but can get their daily dose of exercise by running around the house and garden. They also enjoy games that test them mentally, as they are highly intelligent.
E. Adaptability
A good choice for the novice owner, the Papillon can live in small apartments or large houses, and are relatively easy-going. As long as they get as much attention as they feel they deserve, this breed will be happy!
